The state’s first scholar and scientist, Lapham was a leader in such varied fields as botany, geology, meteorology, archeology, cartography, zoology, horticulture and history. His most important works included a book published by the Smithsonian on the state’s Indian mounds. Lapham is known as the “Father of the Weather Bureau” for his long advocacy of a federal weather system, established in 1870.
