Sherburn Sanborn Merrill

A career in railroad management connected Merrill with Alexander Mitchell who asked him to become superintendent of the largest railroad in the state. Later known as the Chicago, Milwaukee & St. Paul, it became the world’s longest incorporated railroad. Merrill supervised construction of the roundhouses and repair shops in the Menomonee Valley. He settled to the north on Wisconsin Avenue in an area known to this day as Merrill Park.
