Joseph Schlitz

Upon coming to Milwaukee in 1855, Schlitz worked in the brewery of August Krug. When Krug died, Schlitz took over management of the brewery for Krug’s widow, Anna Marie whom he married. After a new brewery was built in 1874, the company was reorganized and incorporated as the Joseph Schlitz Brewing Company. While returning to Germany for a visit, Schlitz tragically lost his life at sea off the coast of England.
