Edward George Ryan (1810 to 1880)

Ryan prosecuted many high-profile cases. He was appointed chief justice of the state Supreme Court in 1874. A colorful and controversial justice who frequently irritated his colleagues, he was nonetheless recognized as one of the nation’s leading jurists.
