Beer Barons

Milwaukee had approximately 30 breweries in 1860 most in the form of small self-brewing taverns. By 1880 only 15 were considered big business and only 6 made it through the 13 years of prohibition. Early 1900s Milwaukee was half the size it is today but had twice the number of taverns and tied houses. Prohibition, two wars, continued industrialization, and globalization would bring more turbulence and change. Through it all, beer remained an important and integral part of Milwaukee.
